On December 4th, Triumph Motorcycle Japan held a press conference for the new Speed Twin series in Tennoz, Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo. President and CEO Yosuke Onuki announced that domestic sales have increased 2.3-fold, from 1,958 units in 2019 to 4,515 units by 2024 (through November). Factors contributing to this expansion include strengthening the sales network and product appeal, with the former having seen the opening of 20 new stores across the country over the past five years. Furthermore, this year, Triumph Motorcycles introduced two models, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, which can be ridden with a standard motorcycle license, and it can be said that these efforts have borne fruit.

At the launch event, Eiji Kotoge of the comedy duo Bike King, who owns a 1961 Triumph Tiger T110, and Natsumi Hirajima, a motorcycle enthusiast and celebrity well-known among riders, took to the stage for a talk show. Regarding the new Speed Twin, Kotoge commented, “I like how it maintains the image of the old model.” Hirajima also said enthusiastically, “I’d love to try racing this on a circuit!”, to which President Onuki, who was sitting next to him, responded, “By all means!”

Triumph Speed Twin 900…From 1,199,000 yen (scheduled for release in January 2025)

There are three color variations. The photo shows the cheapest aluminum silver, which costs 1,199,000 yen.

The new Speed Twin 900 has revamped styling. While retaining the modern classic feel of the previous model, the fuel tank now has a new design with a fork clearance at the front. In addition, the side covers, which were previously based on curves, now have a sharper design. The front forks have changed from a φ41mm upright type with boots to a φ43mm inverted type made by Marzocchi, and to match this, the front fender now comes with a fork protector. The rear shock unit now has a separate reservoir tank made by Marzocchi, and the rear wheel travel has been slightly reduced from 120mm to 116mm. The aluminum swingarm has also been redesigned.

The Pure White and Phantom Black models shown in the photo are priced at 1,234,000 yen.

The 900cc water-cooled, four-stroke, parallel twin-cylinder engine with a 270-degree phase crank is basically unchanged from the previous model. The lights have a more modern design, with the taillights in particular now very compact. The meter is a new model with a TFT screen, and also features smartphone connectivity and a USB-C port. There are three body colors available, with prices starting from 1,199,000 yen. Considering the updated features, the previous model was priced from 1,155,000 yen, so this can be said to be a very strategic price setting.

The maximum output of 65ps (48kW) / 7500rpm and maximum torque of 80Nm / 3800rpm remain unchanged from the previous model. The two riding modes, Road and Rain, are also common. A torque assist clutch is used, and the transmission is five-speed.

Triumph Speed Twin 1200…From 1,849,000 yen (Released in late November 2024)

The Speed Twin 1200 comes in three color variations. The Aluminum Silver shown in the photo is priced at 1,849,000 yen. The Crystal White x Sapphire Black and Carnival Red x Sapphire Black colors are priced at 1,884,000 yen.

The Speed Twin 1200, which comes in two variations, STD and RS, has also undergone styling changes similar to those of the 900. Compared to the 900’s 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, the 1200/RS has 17-inch wide tires both front and rear, giving it a sportier image.

The maximum output of the engine has been increased by 5ps to 105ps for both the STD and RS. There are two riding modes, Road and Rain, and the RS adds a Sport mode to these for a total of three. Both models come standard with optimized cornering ABS and optimized traction control.

The standard handlebars are 17.8mm higher than the previous model and moved 13.4mm forward. Although it’s less than one handlebar length, this creates a larger, wider feeling when riding. The price starts at 1,849,000 yen, up about 100,000 yen from the previous model’s 1,749,000 yen.

The 1200cc water-cooled, four-stroke, parallel-twin engine with a 270-degree phase crankshaft has increased its maximum output from 100ps to 105ps. Maximum torque of 112Nm/4250rpm remains unchanged from the previous model. The new engine’s appearance is slimmer and squarer. The transmission has six speeds, compared to the 900’s five.

The front calipers have been changed from Brembo M50s to Triumph-branded radial mounts. The wheels are new, with Metzeler Sportec M9RR tires as standard. The front forks are Marzocchi φ43mm inverted forks with 120mm of wheel travel.

The rear shock unit is equipped with a separate reservoir tank made by Marzocchi. Like the 900, the wheel travel has been reduced from 120mm to 116mm.

Triumph Speed Twin 1200RS… 2,229,000 yen (released in late November 2024)

In addition to the Sapphire Black shown in the photo, Baja Orange x Sapphire Black is also available.

The “RS”, the top model of the Speed Twin 1200, differs from the standard model in that it further improves cornering performance by adopting an Ohlins rear shock unit, Brembo Stylema calipers, and Metzeler Racetec RR K3 tires. The riding position has been revised to make it easier to apply weight to the front wheel by lowering the handlebars by 16.2 mm and raising the footpegs by 6.5 mm and 40 mm back compared to the new standard model.

The suspension system, which includes Brembo Stylema calipers and Metzeler Racetec RR K3, is comparable to that of the latest super sports cars.

The rear shock unit comes with a separate reservoir tank from Ohlins.

It is worth noting that this is the first time that a Triumph Modern Classic Series model comes standard with a quickshifter, which, combined with the engine’s 5ps increase in power, will further enhance the sporty character of the RS.

A quick shifter sensor can be seen on the shift linkage.
