An adventure bike where classic meets innovative

The latest addition to the popular R12 series, known for its classic aesthetic, is the R12 G/S. This adventure bike blends modern technology with a style that pays homage to the classic R80 G/S, which achieved numerous victories in the Paris-Dakar Rally in the early 1980s.

The design is noteworthy. The round headlights, asymmetrical meters, and two-tone graphics on the fuel tank evoke a nostalgic ambiance. Meanwhile, the LED lights and refined finish add a touch of modernity. The slim body lines and long legs hint at off-road performance.

The engine is powered by an air-oil-cooled 1170cc boxer twin. Like the other R12 series models, its maximum output of 109 horsepower is modest compared to water-cooled boxers, but it boasts a flat power output that holds up well from low rpm and a mild feel.

The drivetrain employs BMW’s traditional shaft drive system. The chassis uses a newly designed steel tube frame, and the suspension is equipped with an inverted fork in the front and a Paralever monoshock in the rear, making it comfortable to ride both on and off-road. Weighing approximately 229 kg, it is relatively light for this class, and its easy handling is also an appealing feature. It

also comes equipped with electronic controls such as three riding modes (Rain/Road/Enduro), cornering ABS, and traction control. Despite its classic appearance, it is also worth noting that it is generously equipped with modern safety technology to support the rider. The R12 G/S is not just a nostalgic model; it is a true retro adventure that recreates the adventurous spirit of the past with modern technology.

Test drive impressions: The moment you start driving, your mind is transported to the wilderness

The first thing I noticed the moment I straddled the BMW R12 G/S was how comfortable it felt. While the seat height is a little high, the slim body and moderate handlebar width are perfectly balanced, making it easy to reach the ground without any worries. When I started the engine, the characteristic pulsating left-right pulse of a horizontally opposed twin engine was felt throughout my body. The endless scenery unfolding before my eyes made my heart leap. I think the high line of sight and simple cockpit naturally made me feel that way. The

clutch engagement was light, and the torque welling up from low in the rev range allowed for smooth launches. Around town, even at 2,000 rpm, I was able to get into the flow and there was no jerking whatsoever. Then, when I opened the throttle, the 1170cc air-oil-cooled boxer engine pushed the bike forward as if kicking the ground. As the engine revs increased, the pulsating feeling disappeared, and smoothness became apparent. It truly felt like a transition from heartbeat to melody. The exhaust note is as unassuming as ever, but that’s precisely why it doesn’t unnecessarily strain me or tire me out. What was surprising was the bike’s excellent cornering performance. It felt particularly stable in mid-speed corners, with the suspension compressing under load and the bike sticking firmly to the road. At the same time, it didn’t feel heavy even in tight turns, and moved surprisingly nimbly. The upright riding position and wide field of vision created a sense of oneness with nature, and it felt great just to cruise along. Of course, there was wind pressure on the highway, but the seat, which looks slim but doesn’t put pressure on the waist even over long distances, and the fit with the slim fuel tank was impeccable, allowing me to cover long distances in comfort.

Don’t overthink it, just enjoy the ride!

The moment we entered a forest road during the test ride, the bike’s character completely changed. The supple suspension carefully glided over the fine crushed stone and small gaps. The suspension moved as if it was reading the road surface and enveloping it. Its movement was never abrupt, but rather gentle. Even when going over unexpected rocks or ruts, the bike smoothly and smoothly absorbed the force. It was as if it anticipated the rider’s intentions.

Particularly noteworthy were the skillful traction control and ABS controls. There was no sense of intervention that is common with electronic controls; rather, it felt like a partner that helped me ride smoothly. Even when the front end slipped slightly, there was no sense of fear. Opening the throttle instantly restored stability. I think the 21-inch front wheels and long suspension were a great help. The relaxed movement gave the rider time to react.

After becoming accustomed to the bike, I tried out the “Enduro Bro” mode, which minimizes electronic intervention, and I was able to enjoy a slight tailslide with just a touch of the throttle. The more I ride, the more I’m drawn deeper into its world. It’s as if the bike is telling me, “There’s no need to overthink things, just enjoy yourself.” This must have been the true joy of big off-road racing in the ’80s. I can finally understand why this bike was designed as a “classic that can be ridden off-road.”

The R12 G/S is more than just a retro bike. It blends modern technology with nostalgic design in an exquisite balance, directly conveying the joy of riding. No matter what road you choose, you’ll want to go somewhere far away – this is a rare bike that stirs that urge.

The pulsating feel of the air-oil cooled boxer twin and the supple suspension are in harmony, allowing for effortless driving on and off the road. Contrary to its classic appearance, the ride is light and stable, allowing you to directly experience the joy of maneuvering.

Riding position

The upright design provides a wide field of view, and the handlebar position is natural, making it less tiring to ride for long periods of time. It is also easy to assume a standing position, making it suitable for a wide range of riding styles, from touring to riding on forest roads. The seat is a little high, but the body is slim, so it is easier to reach the ground than it looks. The rider’s height is 179cm.

Detailed explanation

The 1170cc air-oil cooled horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine is a DOHC 4-valve engine that produces a maximum output of 109ps/7000rpm and a maximum torque of 11.7kg-m/6500rpm. This highly reliable unit is an evolution of the R1200GS late model that was converted to a twin cam in 2010.

The bikini cowl and round headlight, which pay homage to the R80G/S, are equipped with X-design DRLs that emphasize the adventure feel. All lighting is unified with the latest full LEDs.

The flat-type fuel tank, designed for off-road driving, holds approximately 15.5 liters and boasts a fuel efficiency of 19.6 km/L in WMTC mode, allowing for a theoretical range of approximately 300 km on a full tank.

The specially colored tandem seat included in the premium “Option 719” model lineup has a luxurious feel with carefully selected materials and finishes, and is extremely comfortable to ride in.

The φ45mm inverted forks have a generous stroke of 210mm. In addition to preload adjustment, the rebound and compression sides of the dampers can be adjusted separately on the left and right, allowing for precise settings.

The rear is equipped with a fully adjustable shock absorber with a stroke of 200mm, ensuring a ground clearance of 240mm, and providing full-scale off-road performance. Both front and rear shock absorbers are made by Marzocchi.

The front and rear dual discs are combined with Brembo 2-piston calipers, and the partially linked front and rear “ABS Pro” is standard equipment, providing stable braking force when cornering.

The shaft drive uses BMW’s unique Paralever system to suppress tail lift. It also features high maintenance efficiency and excellent dirt resistance for off-road driving.

The standard solo seat has a seat height of 860mm (17 inches) or 875mm (18 inches) depending on the rear wheel size, while the optional rally seat has a seat height of 880mm or 895mm, respectively.

The Enduro Package Pro is equipped with wide, spiked off-road steps that prevent damage to the soles of your shoes and can be rotated 90 degrees by hand to adjust the height.

The standard tires are Metzeler Karoo Street, suitable for both on- and off-road use, while the off-road-specific Karoo 4 is fitted with the Enduro Package Pro.

A mechanical steering damper supports stability at high speeds. This simple yet highly reliable system provides a natural feel that does not interfere with self-steering even when driving off-road.

The classic round single meter features an analog speedometer and also includes indicators for ABS and traction control. The lower LCD displays rpm, distance, gear position, riding mode, etc.

The fully-optioned test vehicle was equipped with the “Comfort Package” which included a quick shifter, cruise control, and heated grips. The dial-type controller
