The foot reach is good and it feels safe even in the rain, which is a subtle but amazing evolution. | Ducati New Multistrada V4S Overseas Test Ride Report

Impressive! New Ducati Multistrada V4S

Upgraded to focus on electronic control while following the conventional model

The first-generation Multistrada, released in 2010, was based on the “4 Bikes in One” concept, transforming with the flip of a switch into a machine optimized for each of the following riding styles: Sport, Touring, Urban, and Enduro. In 2021, the engine was upgraded from a V2 to a V4 and a 19-inch front wheel was adopted, evolving into a new generation. The latest 2025 model boasts further upgrades, primarily focused on electronic control. While the design remains largely unchanged, a closer look reveals changes to the front cowl, wheels, and muffler. The 1058cc V4 Gran Turismo engine boasts a maximum output of 170 horsepower and an improved cylinder deactivation function, enabling fuel-efficient driving with only the rear two cylinders, not only when stationary but also at low speeds. The swingarm pivot position has also been raised by 1mm, improving traction during acceleration. Electronic controls have also been further improved, with a function to lower the vehicle height just before it comes to a stop, as well as a “bump detection” function that detects the impact of the front wheel going over a bump and instantly optimizes the rear suspension damper. A “wet” mode has also been added for rainy weather. Support functions such as cruise control that automatically tracks the vehicle using radar, blind spot detection in the rearview mirror, and the newly added “forward collision detection” are also generous, and should be especially useful on long-distance tours or when you’re tired in bad weather. In summary, the new Multistrada V4S has refined its existing advanced features while also improving ease of handling, safety, and comfort.

Wet Mode and Interlocking Brakes for Safe Riding in the Rain The biggest highlight is the automatic lowering device.

The new model incorporates a system that adjusts the rear suspension preload and lowers the seat height by approximately 30 mm when the vehicle speed drops below 10 km/h. I found it easy to reach the ground, and it’s especially useful on rough terrain like dirt. This is also good news for those who have resigned themselves to the assumption that a high ride height is the norm for adventure bikes, which require off-road capability.

The test ride took place in a rural town in central Italy, but unfortunately, it rained all day. We decided to switch gears and head into the perfect weather for an adventure test. The newly added “Wet” mode proved to be a great help. It gently increased the power output, maximized cornering ABS and traction control, and even automatically adjusted the suspension to wet-specific settings. The bike’s grip on the road was impressive, even in the rain.

The new model also features improved front and rear interlocking brake precision, allowing for rear-to-front control in addition to the traditional “front-to-rear” control. Simply pressing the brake pedal distributes the braking force optimally between the front and rear brakes, allowing you to press hard with confidence even on fully wet roads. In addition, the electronically controlled suspension controls the bike’s posture in real time, ensuring a stable ride at all times. You can even ride on tricky winding roads using only the rear brake, resulting in a safe and comfortable high-paced ride. Moreover, these support functions can be freely adjusted, so the rider never loses the joy of controlling the bike. In the sense that anyone can ride safely and fast, this concept is shared with the recently released new Panigale V4S, and it can be said to indicate a new direction for Ducati.

Extremely sporty and ready for off-road use

Towards the end of the race, the rain finally let up, and I switched to “Sport” mode, revealing the true Ducati. The acceleration of the fully powered V4 engine was truly overwhelming. The suspension was stiffened, and brake distribution was optimized for full braking, instantly shifting me into combat mode. The sharp handling and nimble footwork, which didn’t even hint at the 19-inch front wheels, were thrilling. It was the sensibility of a true sports bike. And with electronic support, I could confidently take on any corner. High-speed cruising and winding roads were the Multistrada V4S’s forte.

Off-road, I switched to the optional spoke wheels and dual-purpose tires. While riding, I switched to “Enduro” mode and sprinted up a forest road with scattered scree and ruts. Engine output was limited to 115 hp, and the suspension was set for supple handling for rough terrain. The ABS and traction control intervention is minimized, quickly changing to a setting that makes sliding easier, and once you get used to it, you can even enjoy adventure-like riding, sliding the rear wheel while turning. I tried riding with my luggage packed into aluminum pannier cases, and even in the worst conditions of rain and fog, I was able to enjoy a very enjoyable ride, which I think is thanks to the Multistrada V4S’s excellent design philosophy, supported by the latest electronic controls.

As an aside, in a large adventure model comparison test conducted by Motorrad, a prestigious German motorcycle magazine released in September 2024, the Multistrada V4 S (2024 model) took first place overall, beating out a number of strong rivals. Go faster and further in safety and comfort. I can confidently say that this is a bike that embodies the ideal adventure tourer.

Detailed explanation

The front cowl has a revised nose and DRL headlight design, and a new function has been added to brighten the area near the front wheels. A square radar sensor is installed in the center.

The “V4 Gran Turismo” engine delivers a maximum output of 170ps/10,500rpm from a water-cooled 90-degree V4 DOHC 4-valve 1158cc engine. While it originates from the Panigale V4, the engine displacement is different and the valve drive system is not the traditional desmodromic system but a spring system aimed at durability.

The exhaust system is newly designed and complies with Euro 5. The silencer has a thinner and more compact shape, and the sound has been tuned.

The Adventure Travel & Radar specification is equipped with cross-spoke wheels and Scorpion Rally STR tires. A “bump detection function” has been added to the electronically controlled suspension. It has the function of instantly analyzing impacts from the front and optimizing the rear shock settings.

The electronically controlled suspension is optimized by default according to the riding mode, but the new model adds a suspension mode that can be set independently while riding. Both the front and rear suspensions are made by Marzocchi, which was jointly developed with Ducati.

The aluminum swingarm is a double-supported design that combines a flexible rigidity balance with the benefits of light weight. The pivot position has been raised by 1mm to create an anti-squat effect, improving traction performance and handling when riding tandem or carrying luggage.

Braking power has been strengthened by adopting a new Brembo caliper and increasing the disc diameter from the previous φ265mm to φ280mm. It is also equipped with a front and rear linked brake that has a newly added function that distributes part of the braking force to the front when the rear brake is applied.

8. The rear brake pedal has been redesigned to a wider type, improving operability, especially off-road. The lever ratio has also been revised to improve comfort and control.

The seat height can be adjusted in two stages (840mm/860mm). By combining it with an optional seat, it can be further adjusted within a range of ±30mm. The seat heater and grip heater can also be set to five different levels.

The supports for the side and top cases have been moved rearward (aluminum 30mm/12mm, plastic 25mm/12mm) to improve passenger comfort. The top case rack is also made of sturdy die-cast steel.

The rearview mirror is equipped with a blind spot detection (BSD) indicator, and the new model also features a forward collision warning (FCW) function, further improving safety.

The top right is the ACC, the +- in the middle is for adjusting the distance between vehicles, and the left is for suspension adjustment and riding mode. Change the settings with the joystick on the bottom right. You can quickly adjust the settings even while driving.

The 13.6.5-inch TFT color display remains the same as before, but now features a riding mode called “Wet,” a power mode called “Off-road,” and three-stage adjustable engine brake control (EBC). Japanese display is now also available.
