Indian Chieftain Power Plus Dark Horse…from 4,530,000 yen

Indian’s new Chieftain Power Plus Dark Horse

Equipped with a new engine inherited from the bagger race champion

Featuring a streamlined form that combines aerodynamic performance with stylish design, this sports bagger blends modern and classic styles. Its sophisticated details, such as the large inverted fork-mounted fairing and authentic gunfighter seat, create a powerful driving experience. The new Powerplus 112 engine features a modern layout: a water-cooled V-twin OHC 4-valve engine with an increased displacement of 112 cubic inches (1834cc), boosting both maximum power and torque. The newly developed inverted fork, FOX rear shock, and lightweight aluminum frame also improve cornering performance and handling precision. Incidentally, its performance is already proven by the fact that a factory machine equipped with the new Powerplus 112 won the 2024 King of the Baggers title.

The latest safety technology and comfort features, including a 6-axis IMU (Integrated Measurement Unit) for traction control and cornering ABS, and electronically controlled drag torque control (electronic engine braking), support the rider. The 7-inch touchscreen allows for intuitive music and navigation controls. It also comes equipped with essential equipment for long-distance touring, such as lockable large-capacity 68L saddlebags, a push-button electric windshield, and cruise control. Another feature not to be missed is the rear cylinder stop function, which improves fuel economy and comfort when riding at low speeds, such as in traffic jams.

It’s big and heavy, but surprisingly sporty when you drive it.

The moment you fire up the engine, the deep, low thump typical of an American V-twin reverberates throughout your entire body. Despite its rugged looks, however, it has minimal vibration, and its light rotational feel is surprisingly light considering its displacement.

The first thing you notice the moment you saddle up is the low riding position and solid presence. While the bike weighs an impressive 366 kg, the seat height is a modest 672 mm. With both feet firmly planted on the ground, handling is effortless. The 7-inch TFT display in front of you is easy to use with touchscreen operation, and intuitive control of mode functions and other features makes it stress-free.

Once you start riding, you’ll be amazed at the acceleration that belies its massive size. The new engine, shared with the top-of-the-line Challenger model, responds directly to throttle inputs and delivers flat torque from low revs, resulting in agile footwork that belies its appearance. The mid-range, between 2000 and 4000 rpm, is particularly packed with usable power, so powerful it was even enjoyable to ride in a slalom on the special course where the test ride took place. The handling is smooth and you can ride it normally in the city without having to position yourself strangely.

Cornering is also smooth, and for a moment you forget its weight. The engine has a low center of gravity, held in a strong yet lightweight aluminum frame, and the front and rear suspensions have ample capacity, allowing you to turn smoothly at deeper banking angles than you would expect. The riding feel is like that of a sports bike, as you can pitch it when braking to create an opportunity to lean it over.

A “luxury tourer” that’s comfortable even over long distances

Furthermore, advanced safety features like cornering ABS and traction control with a 6-axis IMU provide subtle support, allowing you to ride with confidence without worrying too much about the road surface. These features help reduce fatigue and maintain concentration, making them especially appreciated on longer distances. The power windshield, which moves up and down with a single push, is also excellent, skillfully managing wind pressure even when you’re upright, and the rear cylinder deactivation function, which reduces heat dissipation, is essential for summer traffic jams. Imagine cruising along the highway with your luggage loaded in the large side bags, listening to good music , and using cruise control—and fantasies of crossing the continent begin to unfold in your mind.

The Chieftain Powerplus Dark Horse is more than just a style-focused bagger. In addition to its impressive visuals, it also boasts the characteristics of a “luxury tourer” with advanced equipment and a supple ride. For riders who love American V-twin engines but also demand uncompromising modern performance, this is the ideal bike.

Although it is an extremely heavy bike, once you start riding, the engine is smooth and the handling is even more agile than it looks. However, its forte is still cruising. High-speed touring, taking advantage of its inherent power and comfort, is a pleasure.

The eye-catching, flowing bodywork blends the tradition and modernity of American cruisers. At first glance, it looks much the same as the previous model, but in line with the significant increase in engine power, the previous steel frame has been upgraded to an aluminum backbone frame like the higher-end Challenger model. The design has been revised from the distinctive large fairing and side bags, to the seat and front and rear fenders.

The large 19-inch front (16-inch rear) aluminum cast wheels are fitted with Brembo monoblock 4-piston calipers and φ320mm dual discs, providing powerful braking power. It also boasts the latest level of safety, with traction control and cornering ABS using a 6-axis IMU.

The front suspension is equipped with a SHOWA inverted fork and a FOX single shock with hydraulic preload adjustment in the rear. The stroke is 130mm in the front and 114mm in the rear, which is ample for the cruiser segment and provides a comfortable ride. The tires are Metzeler CruiseTec.

The large front fairing has also been redesigned. The headlights and other lights are now fully LED, and an electric windscreen is used. When the windscreen is fully raised, an air vent appears to let in wind.

The seat is a gunfighter type with a raised backrest, but is also shaped to allow for stable tandem riding. It provides excellent support and is thick and comfortable to ride on. It is equipped with a movable electric screen, speedometer and engine tachometer, and speakers. The 178mm full-color touchscreen display allows you to set various items such as riding modes and various functions.

The small box-like device visible on the stay of the integrated tail and brake lamp is a radar sensor. This latest safety feature uses indicators on the meter display and rearview mirror to warn of vehicles approaching rapidly from behind or in the blind spot.

The side bags, which are the origin of the word “bagger,” are a symbol of the bike. They are hard-type bags with a combined capacity of over 68L and come with a remote locking mechanism, making them very practical. They are specially designed so they don’t protrude too much on either side, making them stylish.

7It is equipped with a new function that shuts off the rear cylinder when the vehicle is stationary, improving fuel economy and comfort. The new generation “Powerplus112” engine is also used in high-end touring models such as the “Roadmaster” and “Challenger.”

It features a 7-inch full-color TFT display. The touchscreen displays three ride modes (standard, sport, rain), as well as warnings from the rear radar and various other information. Bluetooth connectivity supports comfortable riding.

The cockpit has a sense of security, with an analog speedometer on the right and a tachometer on the left, sandwiched between a central multi-function display, and speakers located on the outside.

The right-hand switch box contains the main switch for turning on the power, the ignition switch, switches for cruise control and the electric screen, and more.

The left switch box contains the horn button, headlight switch, combined turn signal and hazard light switch, menu screen scroll switch, etc. Thanks to the touch screen design, it is simple to use.

Riding position (rider height 179cm)

The footpegs are not positioned too far forward, and the handlebars are pulled forward at a moderate level, allowing you to ride in a relaxed, natural posture. Thanks to the low seat height of 672 mm, your feet can reach the ground very easily.

As long as you don’t lean the bike over, you won’t feel much stress from the weight.
