Design impact
Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s Chinese subsidiary, Xinhuai Honda, has announced a new scooter, the Square X125.
The first impression of the Square X125 is its strong “square feel” that actively incorporates straight lines and corners. The styling aims for a balance between ruggedness and pop, setting it apart from conventional solid off-road scooters. Visual play with “shape” is evident in every detail, from the ridges of the exterior panels, the three-dimensional effect around the front light, and the contrast between the angular form and the round light.
The rear seat is removable or flip-up type, and serves as a backrest for the rider. In addition, there is also a specification with a foldable table tray on top of the rear carrier, aiming to improve convenience when camping or playing outdoors.
Along with the boxy form, the tires, suspension, and handlebars are given an adventure-like feel, achieving a balance between appearance and functionality.
Engine, performance and technical specifications
The engine is a 125cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine (eSP+ equivalent specification) that is also used in Honda and related models. With a maximum output of 7.0kW (approximately 9.5 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 10Nm, it covers a range aimed at both everyday use and leisure use.
The vehicle weighs approximately 111 kg and has a 6.0 liter fuel tank, allowing it to achieve both fuel efficiency and maneuverability from city driving to suburban travel.
The bike is equipped with disc brakes on both the front and rear, and also features ABS. The suspension is configured with boots on the front forks and a twin shock absorber on the rear. It can be said that the bike is also excellent in terms of off-road performance and road-holding ability.
Usage, applications and target development
The Square X125 seems to have been designed as a “hybrid scooter” that can be used for both urban transportation and weekend adventures. Not only does it have an SUV look, but the rear seat flip-up, luggage compartment expansion gimmick, and foldable tray are likely intended to make it suitable for camping, touring, and luggage transport.
For everyday use, it is not only easy to use as a casual scooter for commuting and shopping, but its ABS equipment and lightweight design also make it likely to offer excellent safety and maneuverability.
Target customers include young riders, riders who value individuality, riders who want the convenience of a scooter but also desire the decorative features of an adventure, and hobby riders who are also interested in the outdoors and camping.
At this stage, the Square X125 has been announced mainly for the Chinese market and other Asian countries, and there has been no announcement of its official introduction in Japan. However, the model’s unique style and expandable functionality make it very appealing. It is possible that it may be distributed in the domestic custom market or through parallel imports in the future.
