The Kawasaki Z900RS, a homage to the legendary Z1 and Z2, has been well-received, and Suzuki has also introduced the Katana in the same category. The latest addition to this market is the Honda CB1000F (SE). The CB1000F, packed with cutting-edge technology yet exuding a nostalgic atmosphere, is sure to appeal to older generations who remember the old days. However, it's interesting to see how it will be received by younger generations.
So, I was curious about the exhibition event at Shibuya 109, a hub of youth culture. I went on the opening day, Sunday, October 12th.
Shibuya Scramble Crossing has become one of Japan's most popular tourist spots, attracting many foreign visitors. On the day of the event, it was thronged with inbound tourists. Shibuya 109 is located right in front of the scramble crossing. The small plaza at the main entrance was packed with people. At the center of the exhibit were four Honda CB1000Fs and CB1000F SEs.
While Sakura Takeuchi, a race announcer who enjoys circuit racing herself, introduced the CB1000Fs with a witty MC, passersby in Shibuya stopped to take notice of Honda's new bikes.
While there weren't any live talks or other content, the highlight of the exhibit was the opportunity to freely touch and ride any model. It's rare to get the chance to actually ride a new model before its release.
While many people were riding bikes, what was particularly striking was the active participation of foreigners. A family, apparently visiting Japan for sightseeing, had their child straddle the bike and was taking endless photos. Perhaps because young Japanese men are shy, many only touched the bikes hesitantly. It was actually the younger women who followed the staff's urging to climb aboard.
In any case, I believe the CB1000F's presence was well-received. Given Shibuya's location, it was also significant that the bike was widely recognized among young people.
