A lush green landscape overlooking the Shiretoko Cross-Island Road (National Route 334).

The Shiretoko Peninsula, jutting out northeast from the eastern side of Hokkaido, overlooks Kunashiri Island across the Nemuro Strait and has long been known as a place of untouched nature. Mount Rausu, 1,661 meters above sea level, towers in the middle of the peninsula. Originally designated Shiretoko National Park, it has since been designated a World Heritage Site, renowned for its rich natural environment. The coordinates and address data shown below are for the Shiretoko Pass Parking Lot, located approximately midway along the Shiretoko Cross-Island Road (National Route 334), which crosses the center of the Shiretoko Peninsula. It is approximately 17 kilometers from Rausu Town, a 20-minute drive on a winding road. Mount Rausu can be seen to the right (northeast) of the road, and Mount Tencho (1,046 meters above sea level) can be seen to the left on the opposite side. The Shiretoko Pass Observatory is a 100-meter walk from the parking lot, allowing you to fully enjoy the atmosphere of Shiretoko.

On the south side of Mount Tencho is Gono Numa, a wonderful environment for strolling. By reading the tourist information below in advance, you can enjoy the scenery and atmosphere of this World Heritage Site in your own style. Continuing along Route 344, you’ll find plenty of scenic spots, including Ponhoro Numa, the Pioneer’s Hut, Puyuni Pass Observatory, and Furepe Falls (Maiden’s Tears). Heading along the coastline toward Shari Town, you’ll find Roadside Station Utoro-Shirietoku, with accommodations also available around nearby Cape Utoro. Hokkaido is a dream destination for riders, and the feeling of having traveled all this way is especially strong. While Bihoro Pass near Kitami is also a wonderful route for touring, we highly recommend extending your trip to Shiretoko if you’ve come this far.

Shiretoko National Park is a place where you can feel at peace with your soul.
