A narrow gravel road leading to Namesawa Valley.

The Izu Peninsula is a popular destination for touring riders. There are three main routes to Cape Irozaki, located at the southern tip of the peninsula. National Route 135, running along the east side, offers views of Sagami Bay, passing through Atami, Ito, Izukogen, Kawazu, and Shimoda. Meanwhile, National Route 136 on the west side offers beautiful coastal views of Toi, Dogashima, and Matsuzaki, all while overlooking Suruga Bay. The other route, the Amagi Mountain Route, which we’ll introduce here, runs through the mountains in the center of the Izu Peninsula, using National Route 414. If you take the local roads, you’ll pass from Numazu to Izunokuni City, passing Shuzenji, then crossing the Amagi Mountain Pass. Eventually, you’ll reach Shimoda via the Kawazu Nanataki Loop Bridge. While there are other express routes, such as the Izu Chuo Expressway and the Izu Skyline, motorcycle travel on local roads, with the freedom to make detours, is also a unique experience.

The address and coordinates for this trip are for “Amagigoe Roadside Station.” It’s approximately 17km from Shuzenji. The stone-built “Amagi Tunnel (old Amagi Tunnel, opened in 1905)” seen in the title photo is only 5km away. Conversely, about 2.5km before (towards Shuzenji) is the Joren Falls Tourist Center, which also offers parking, restrooms, and an oasis. Also, about 1km past the Amagigoe Roadside Station (towards Shimoda) is Namezawa Valley, where you can park your bike, stroll, and enjoy the soothing clear waters. We recommend researching the area in advance on the tourist information website listed below. There are

many attractions, including the historic Old Amagi Tunnel, Joren Falls, Kami Falls, Amagi Wasabi Village, Kawazu Seven Falls, and Otaki Falls, all visible in the flow of the Hontani River. The surrounding area is also home to numerous hot springs, making it a great spot for overnight trips.

The beauty of the clear stream washing over the bedrock is exceptional

The scenery of Namezawa Valley will surely show off a different kind of beauty in the coming autumn foliage season.

A rapid stream flows through the monolith of Namezawa Valley.

The water in the river that flows through the mountains from Yugashima to Amagi Pass is very clean.

Wasabi fields symbolize the purity of water.

Joren Falls is one of the largest in Izu, boasting a drop of 25m and a width of 7m.

A vast field of wasabi is located right next to Joren Falls.
