The story begins in 1994. That season, Honda won the 500cc class title for the first time since 1989. The rider was Mick Doohan.

Why hadn’t they won the title for five years? One reason was that the NSR500 was too powerful and not a bike that a person could handle. The idea that power equals good has been a tradition at Honda Engineering that has been passed down since the company’s founder, Soichiro Honda. The 1994 NSR500 was the result of their efforts to make the bike “more manageable for people,” and that was a successful season.

Changing the engine characteristics from an unusable high-power engine calculated by engineers on paper to one that is easy to handle and can win in actual races is a very rare “incident” in Honda’s long history of racing.

We will reveal the story behind this incident and look back on the Honda NSR500’s rapid advance that began from there, culminating in a perfect victory in every race in 1997 and six consecutive victories with the 1999 model.

A banking angle of about 20 degrees from the ground, elbows in, feet out… The evolution of cornering positions seen in the pinnacle of road racing, the World GP and MotoGP, that have changed the era

One of the things that proves the improvement in cornering speed of motorcycles is the depth of the banking angle. In MotoGP, the pinnacle of road racing, riders corner with such a deep banking angle that it feels as if they are lying flat on the road. Are they leaning the bike to the limit? Or are they on the verge of falling? They are racing through corners at such an angle that it is hard to tell. Here we take a look at the evolving cornering positions and characteristics of the GP riders who led the era. REPORT ● KITA Hideaki
