The challenge of a global cultural brand shows the power of reinterpretation

Deus Ex Machina’s latest endeavor took shape in the form of “Trail Breaker,” a BMW R12. Founded in Australia in 2006, the brand has quickly gained enthusiastic fans around the world as a cultural brand that celebrates the fusion of surfing, motorcycling, art, music, and fashion. More than just apparel, the brand also offers cafes and stores that connect with the local culture and people, presenting a lifestyle that adds color to everyday life.
Deus has now taken on the latest BMW Motorrad roadster, the R12. Jeremy Tagan, chief custom builder at the brand’s Sydney, Australia-based workshop, has taken on the challenge of “reinterpreting” the R12. Rather than reinterpreting the R12, he has instead explored its spirit and potential, elevating it into an adventure machine that can carve out wilderness, as the name Trail Breaker symbolizes.
Minimal customization: the fusion of DNA filter and riding jacket

We want to draw your attention to the minimalist approach to customization. The most notable feature is the exposed DNA filter, a bold design that seamlessly combines presence and functionality. Furthermore, the seat, made from a recycled riding jacket, combines the texture and feel of leather, creating an appearance that is familiar to the rider. By deliberately restoring the original equipment and giving it a new look, it functions as a production that brings the rider closer to the bike without relying on excessive decoration.
The Trail Breaker embodies the philosophy of “maximum individuality through minimalism.” By stripping away unnecessary parts, we have created a design that maximizes the joy of riding by creating an intimacy that unites the rider and the machine.
Sandblasting creates a harmony of ruggedness and functional beauty

The sandblasting process creates a rugged texture, showcasing functional beauty within a sense of mass and weathering. It gives the metal surface the appearance of battle scars, evoking a sense of toughness that makes it seem as though it could easily traverse not only paved roads but also the wilderness. Furthermore, the shining blue Deus badge is placed as an accent, adding a striking color reminiscent of surf culture to the folkloric sophistication.
The design, embodied in the details, is simple yet tells a story. The Trail Breaker is not just a bike; it is a vehicle that simultaneously pursues the necessity and beauty of a tool. Within its refined form, there is a ruggedness that stimulates the spirit of an adventurer.
“Trail Breaker” opens the door to the wilderness, and the next moment

The Trail Breaker, completed as if signed by Jeremy Tagan, quietly opens the door to the wilderness. Just twist the accelerator and a new journey begins with dry wind and dust. There, an adventure awaits, seeking encounters with unknown terrain, rather than the established route known as a paved road.
The Trail Breaker goes beyond being a simple custom BMW R12 and embodies the brand’s philosophy. It embodies the approach of fusing local culture and creativity that is shared at flagship stores around the world.
The Trail Breaker presents a perspective that redefines the motorcycle not as a “vehicle to own” but as a “partner that creates a shared experience.” Because it is minimalist, it leaves room to stir the rider’s senses and emotions, and this space creates a sense of adventure. And it is this space that serves as a mirror that reflects the riding style of the future.
