Commonly known as the “Yonfour,” the legendary Honda CB400FOUR

The Honda CB400FOUR was a pioneering model equipped with a 400cc four-cylinder engine, released in December 1974. The CB400FOUR, which featured a beautiful combined muffler, was also known as the “Yonfour” and is still loved by many enthusiasts as a legendary model.
The engine was an air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, in-line 4-cylinder, 408cc. In 1975 (Showa 50), the year after its release, the driver’s license system was revised, and motorcycle licenses were classified into small-sized licenses under 125cc, medium-sized licenses under 400cc, and non-restricted licenses for over 400cc.
Accordingly, in 1976, the 398cc models “CB400FOUR-I (sporty flat handle version)” and “CB400FOUR-II (raised handle version)” were released as domestic models.
The 398cc model has the same bore diameter (51.0mm), but the stroke has been shortened from 50.0mm to 48.8mm. The key point is that it is a high-revving short-stroke type that increases engine speed and gains power. As a result, maximum output has been reduced from 37ps/8,500rpm to 36ps/8,500rpm, and maximum torque has been reduced from 3.2kg-m/7,500rpm to 3.1kg-m/7,500rpm.
The left and right side covers, which were the same color as the fuel tank, were blacked out for the 398cc model. The tank color continued to be red, but blue was discontinued and changed to yellow.
This car reigns supreme in the used car market as an ultra-high-value model, with prices of several million yen being the norm. In particular, the early 408cc version is now considered the “4-Four of 4-Fours” and tends to be more respected than the 398cc version.
