From left to right: Dio110 Lite, Super Cub 110 Lite, Super Cub 110 Pro Lite, and Cross Cub 110 Lite.

Three new models will debut, for a total of four models.

The four new models are the two Super Cub Lite models, the Cross Cub Lite, and the Dio Lite. The Super Cub Lite includes the Pro, bringing the total to four models. The official names and release dates for each model are as follows:

Both were developed based on the 110 model, and are optimized to fit the new standard moped, the “Lite” series.

Katsuhiro Murooka, president of Honda Motorcycle Japan, talks about the evolution of the Class 1 moped.

Since the introduction of the Super Cub C100 in 1958, Honda has released numerous hit moped models.

To summarize what President Murooka said when he first took to the stage at the press conference, the four models announced this time are models that comply with the “new standard moped (class 1)” that was added in April of this year. Class 1 mopeds are not only a means of transportation that is closely tied to daily life, from personal use such as commuting to work or school to collection and delivery work, but they have also played a major role in shaping the motorcycle market as an entry model that leads to stepping up to motorcycles (larger motorcycles). It is true that the popularity

of zero-handlebars (50cc) was the main driver of the motorcycle boom around 1980. It is well known that this has since developed into a wide variety of variations. It is also important to note that it has made a great contribution to nurturing many riders, that is, many motorcycle users. After all, the ease of driving a moped, not only with a moped license but also with a regular 4-wheel license, cannot be underestimated. It is a great pleasure to see

such a class 1 moped being transformed into a new standard. As you know, the previous classification of engine displacement of 50cc or less (0.6kW or less) has been updated to the following new standards.

One factor behind this is the introduction of Japan’s fourth emission regulations, which will be applied to vehicles produced from November 2025 onward. Even with the previous 50cc, it is technically possible to meet the regulations. However, considering cost and other challenges and unavoidable negative aspects, it is difficult to maintain a balanced business model with zero-handlebar bikes.

Meanwhile, the number of Class 1 mopeds owned in Japan is estimated to be approximately 4.18 million. This new model, which meets the new standards, has been released to meet the expectations of both existing Class 1 moped users and entry-level users.

The lineup consists of four models. Each model’s name incorporates the word “Lite,” reflecting the ease and familiarity of Class 1 mopeds, which are useful to many people. Will the familiar engine displacement classification “Zero Handlebars” (commonly known as “Zero Handlebars”) change to “Light” in the future? This presentation can be seen as the first step towards that.

Although the classification criteria have changed, the fact remains that Class 1 mopeds are a “means of transportation closely related to daily life” for many people.

The classic Super Cub. Its retro-modern styling has earned it widespread acclaim and popularity. Needless to say, the Super Cub 110 Lite is based on the 110 model (class 2 moped). While many parts were shared with the previous 50 model, this one retains the same front and rear cast wheels and tubeless tires. The tire dimensions (width) are also the same, and the front is equipped with a hydraulic disc brake with ABS for a reliable finish. The only difference is the dedicated meter for class 1 mopeds. As can be seen in the photo below, it features a speed warning light in the upper right corner. Other features include a comprehensive LCD digital display of gear position, a clock, and average fuel economy.

The engine, which is the focus of attention, shares the same specifications and compression ratio, so it’s safe to assume that most of the hardware is essentially the same. The main changes appear to be minor adjustments to the intake and exhaust systems and changes to the ECU programming that controls fuel mixture and ignition. Since details were not disclosed, this remains purely speculation, but it appears that the 110 ratio reduces air intake and fuel supply, resulting in the output characteristics shown in the graph below. While the possibility of a dedicated cam cannot be ruled out, the company’s product strategy also kept the price low to reduce user burden, so it’s more likely that this was addressed through ECU software tuning. In any case, the engine performance curve below, which compares it to the 50, shows that it delivers ample torque by fully utilizing the engine’s displacement advantage, and we can expect it to deliver driving performance that leaves you with plenty of power even from the get-go. The transmission gear ratios are the same, but the secondary reduction ratio has been lowered from 2.500 to 2.642 for the Lite, which we imagine will make it more flexible and easier to handle at mid- to low-speeds. Naturally, top speed performance will be the same as a 50cc scooter, but it will also be easy to handle and offer tough performance when starting, climbing hills, and accelerating.

Shinichiro Ishida, the developer of Dio 110 Lite.

Like the Super Cub, it was developed based on the Dio 110. As shown below, its key concept was “maintaining an easy-to-use means of daily transportation.” Taking into account the characteristics of traditional 50cc moped users, the design was designed to be user-friendly and suitable for all riders. The chassis and suspension are based on the Dio 110 (50cc moped). The eSP engine, mounted in a unit swing configuration,

is also the same. However, the airflow volume has been reduced and fuel mixture has been optimized. This means that the ECU programming that controls these features appears to have been changed. As a result

, the performance curve shown below, compared to the TACT (50cc), demonstrates ample torque with a clear advantage in the mid-to-low speed range. Particular attention was paid to the newly designed seat base, resulting in a custom-designed, comfortable seat with good foot reach, without reducing the cushion thickness. While the helmet compartment space has been slightly reduced from 18L to 17L, the pursuit of a comfortable ride that allows more riders to sit comfortably is an undeniable attraction.

Like the Super Cub, it is based on the Dio 110, a Class 2 moped.

Kota Kimura, head of the sales area, reports on the strong sales situation that has started off well.

As shown below, the four new models will be sold at approximately 3,700 Honda Commuter and Dream stores. As of October 16th, before the release date, orders are apparently going smoothly. This is proof that there is definitely a need for bikes that are approachable to everyone. While the exterior is similar to the 110 model, which is a Class 2 moped, the “Lite” logo indicates that it is a Class 1 moped.

Also, to spread understanding of the new moped standards, a “special page” has been set up on Honda’s official website, so it would be a good idea to check out the contents.
