Is it okay to load a regular bicycle (mamachari) or motorcycle onto a moving truck? We asked a moving company

The busiest period for moving is from March to early April. Moving prices also decrease on other weekdays.

The busiest time for moving, and moving fees are highest, is from March to early April, when many people move around, such as when new students start school, start working, employees are transferred due to job transfers, and when renting a property. This is a time when it is difficult to make a reservation for a move, and prices also skyrocket due to increased demand.

This applies outside of the peak season from March to early April. Moving costs also tend to be lower on weekdays other than Saturdays and Sundays. If you want to save money on moving costs, you should aim for a weekday outside of the peak season.

For those who want to save even more on moving costs, we recommend reducing the amount of luggage you bring. Reducing the number of heavy and large items, as well as the number of cardboard boxes, will reduce the number of workers and the amount of work required. You can also reduce the size of the trucks used to transport your items, which will reduce costs and the estimated amount.

This truck is equipped with an electric lift gate at the rear. This vehicle is often used for family moves, which tend to involve a large amount of heavy luggage.

Generally, bicycles (mamachari) are OK, but 50cc mopeds are not.

When moving, you may be concerned about the things that are not allowed to be loaded onto the truck. This includes people (in the passenger seat of the truck), animals such as pets, perishable meat and fish, flammable materials such as gasoline and kerosene, explosives, dead bodies and remains, etc. (This is common knowledge. Due to space limitations, we will not go into the reasons why.)

The border between common sense and nonsense seems to be on the borderline between normal bicycles (such as mamachari bicycles) that are not foldable or disassembleable, and 50cc mopeds.

With the exception of “single person moving packages” which have size restrictions, bicycles can generally be loaded onto a truck along with other luggage as long as there is room in the loading compartment (ideally, you should take measures to prevent oil from staining other luggage, such as protecting the chain).

One moving company says that because bicycles that are not foldable or disassembled cannot be stacked like cardboard boxes, they are often loaded by leaning them against the very back of the loading area (at the rear of an almost fully loaded area) and secured with ropes or tie-down belts.

In addition, all motorcycles, including 50cc mopeds, are not allowed to be loaded onto trucks. The reason given by the moving company is that:

・Gasoline, engine oil, disc brake oil, etc. may evaporate or leak, causing dirt and odors in the cargo area. There is also a risk of fire.

Trucks that do not have ladder rails (simple bridges for loading motorcycles onto the bed) or an electrically operated power gate at the rear require time and manpower to load heavy motorcycles onto the bed.

・Many trucks do not have special tools or equipment for securing motorcycles (such as strong tie-down belts or hooks strong enough to secure motorcycles), so there is a high possibility that the motorcycle will tip over inside the container.

・Transporting motorcycles in moving trucks is not permitted (currently, it is common to ask a professional company to transport motorcycles). Therefore, if the motorcycle falls over and is damaged, it will not be covered by insurance.

For the reasons above, many of the companies we interviewed responded, “When transporting motorcycles, including 50cc mopeds, we ask that you use a motorcycle-specific transport service that provides damage compensation.”

However, some companies say that “small electric bikes and electric scooters that do not use oils such as gasoline or engine oil, and small bikes that have been completely drained of oils such as gasoline and engine oil, may be able to be loaded as ‘baggage’ depending on how the customer packs them.” It seems that the decision on this matter is up to each company, so we recommend asking when getting a quote.

The handlebars were removed, the gasoline and engine oil were completely drained, the Monkey Baja was packed in cushioning material, and then transported by truck. See the page below for details of this process.

In an article in the 2002 issue of 4MINI Champ 3, a Monkey BAJA was packed in cardboard and bubble wrap and sent by courier from Osaka City to Aichi Prefecture. The cost was listed as 2,562 yen, but… “Can you still transport a motorcycle for the same price as a courier?” “Can you even send a motorcycle by courier?” and many other questions have arisen. So, we’ve looked into the current situation regarding motorcycle transportation in 2019. REPORT ● KITA Hideaki

Some major moving companies offer an option to have their motorcycle transported by an affiliated motorcycle transport company. In this case, you can avoid the hassle of having to request separate transportation for your motorcycle.

However, if you request a moving company to transport your motorcycle as an option, you will be charged an agency fee in addition to the transportation fee. Therefore, please be aware that the transportation fee tends to be more expensive .

If you want to keep the cost of transporting your motorcycle as low as possible, we recommend that you separately request the services of a specialist motorcycle transport company that offers reasonable “post-to-post” (transport point to transport point) plans.

The other day, while jogging on National Route 16 in a certain city in Chiba Prefecture, I came across a large truck with a container on the loading platform depicting a motorcycle. The container also had a sign saying, “Leave motorcycle transportation to BAS.” Could this truck be carrying a motorcycle?
