The stylish KLX230 SHERPA features an earthy body color that is conscious of the outdoors. It dispels the image of “Kawasaki = lime green” and is easy to coordinate with your favorite outdoor brands and military gear. In addition to the whitish beige shown in the photo, other body colors available include medium smoky green and medium cloudy gray.

A tough and cool companion that can be enjoyed for a wide range of uses, from city riding to trekking.

For off-road enthusiasts, the arrival of the new KLX230 and its low-seat model, the KLX230S, is welcome news. Some fans have been eagerly awaiting it since it was announced at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 last fall. A derivative model has suddenly been added to the lineup: the KLX230 SHERPA, a dual-purpose trekking model based on the KLX230S.

Kawasaki previously sold a trekking model called the “Super Sherpa,” but production of the Japanese model ceased in 2007. The KLX230 SHERPA is a revival of the same name after 17 years, likely driven by the recent boom in outdoor activities. Adventure models are popular among riders who enjoy touring, thanks to their comfortable riding position and ample cargo capacity for long distances. The stronger the outdoor orientation, the more important off-road performance becomes. Yamaha’s Serow 250 was a highly popular lightweight 250cc trekking model for many years, but production was discontinued in 2020 due to stricter exhaust gas regulations. The arrival of the KLX230 SHERPA, boasting a low seat height and genuine off-road performance, is a valuable addition to the lineup.

Some people recommend a 125cc class bike for casual camping trips or trekking, but not being able to use the expressway directly limits your range of activities. If you want to make the most of your limited time and enjoy touring, we can confidently say that the 250cc class KLX230 SHERPA is one excellent answer. Ride wherever your heart desires, sometimes challenging rough roads, and if the return journey is too much of a hassle, just take the expressway straight home! This outdoor-inspired bike looks great at camp and is sure to liven up your motorcycle life as your favorite gear.

The good foot reach reduces the negative aspects of off-road vehicles, making it easy to handle and ride on any road!

The appeal of the KLX230 SHERPA lies first and foremost in the high potential of the KLX230S on which it is based. Inheriting Kawasaki’s motocross DNA, it has excellent off-road performance, and even the low-seat model with a seat height of 845mm has wheel travel of 200mm front and 223mm rear. Ground clearance is 240mm, but in the unlikely event of a hit, a specially equipped aluminum skid plate protects the frame and engine.

The engine is an air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve, single-cylinder, which contributes to the creation of a lightweight, compact body. The settings, which emphasize performance in the low and mid-range, make it easy to handle, and the flat torque characteristics make it easy to control even on slippery roads. Single-cylinder engines can cause fatigue due to vibration, but the use of a gear-driven balancer reduces engine vibration. The 6-speed transmission has gear ratios that are compatible with both on-road and off-road, allowing you to enjoy all-around driving.

What people are curious about is the difference between the KLX230S on which it is based, but it can be said that it is mainly the looks. The biggest differences are the body color and shroud shape, which are the most noticeable points, and the difference in the design around the headlight, which is the face of the bike, also differentiates its character. Looking more closely, you can’t miss the special equipment that gives it a tough image, such as the aluminum tapered handlebars and handguards with metal plates. There is a price difference, but if you think of it as a specification customized to your liking, it could actually be said to be cheaper.

Based on the KLX230S, the shroud shape has been made smaller to improve visibility around the front tire. The slimmer appearance, combined with the earth colors, gives it an outdoor feel.

Although the basic specs are the same as the KLX230S, it is uniquely equipped with lightweight and highly rigid aluminum tapered handlebars, handguards with metal plates on the inside, an aluminum skid plate, a guard bar under the headlight, etc. If you were to customize these separately, the 44,000 yen difference with the KLX230S would seem cheap.

The upright front fork with an inner tube diameter of φ37mm achieves a high level of balance between reliability and operability. With 200mm of wheel travel, it ensures excellent off-road performance. The front tire is a standard 21-inch size for off-road bikes, so there are plenty of options for replacement. The black aluminum rim adds a bold look.

The headlight cover has a design that is divided into upper and lower halves, and the guard bar creates a tough image, giving the car a unique character. The headlights are LED, with low beams on the upper level and high beams on the lower level.

The front brake uses a dual-piston caliper and a φ265mm disc, while the rear brake uses a single-piston caliper and a φ220mm disc. ABS can be disabled depending on the riding condition.

The rear tire is also 18 inches, a standard size for off-road vehicles. The new Uni-Trak suspension with 223mm of wheel travel provides excellent traction and driving stability.

The swingarm is made of the same newly adopted aluminum as the KLX230 and KLX230S, reducing the unsprung weight. It is 1.2 kg lighter than a steel swingarm. The secondary reduction ratio is also the same at 45/14.

It is equipped with a compact, air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve, single-cylinder engine. Its flat torque characteristics make it easy to handle from low to mid-range, allowing for smooth riding even on trails. On highways and other roads, you can rev up the engine as needed for lively high-revving riding.

The meter is a large LCD display common to the KLX230 series. It can be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and can receive incoming call notifications and link with a dedicated app. The display is focused on practicality, with information such as speed, odometer, dual trip, fuel, and clock.

The standard short mirrors do not protrude much. The left switch box is equipped with a red ABS off switch. The ABS is set to automatically return to normal when the engine is restarted. There is a metal plate inside the handguard, so it is strong and reliable.

The seats are made of two types of leather with a fine anti-slip pattern on the top surface, pursuing functionality and design in a simple style. The side covers are slim and two-tone, creating a silhouette that differentiates them from the KLX230.

The slim shrouds create a flowing style from the tank, and the side covers also have a slim design, differentiating it from the motocross-style KLX230.

The side covers are made of matte black resin parts for a two-tone finish. Although the muffler is the same as the KLX230, the details of the covers give it a tough, gear-like feel.

Vehicles equipped with genuine accessories were shown off on the day of the photo shoot. Large carriers and USB Type-C power supplies seem to be common accessories that are installed on new vehicles.

Vehicles equipped with genuine accessories were shown off on the day of the photo shoot. Large carriers and USB Type-C power supplies seem to be common accessories that are installed on new vehicles.

The large carrier (30,030 yen) with a maximum load capacity of 6 kg can accommodate only one person, but it is a great accessory for campers who need to carry large amounts of luggage. A separate ETC 2.0 onboard unit kit (42,680 yen) can be added under the carrier. There is also a small carrier (19,140 yen), which can also be equipped with ETC.

The heavy-duty engine guard (9,339 yen) is finished in the same color as the frame for a sense of unity. Its simple pipework creates an outstanding design that doesn’t assert its presence.

The lineup also includes a USB TYPE-C power supply (7,865 yen), which is convenient for charging smartphones, etc. The right mirror and bracket are fastened together to secure it, and the terminal can be protected with a rubber cap when not in use.

A resin frame cover (2,640 yen) is available for the main frame that rubs when holding the bike. It increases the contact area with the ankle, improving the grip and helping to prevent scratches.

The body color, medium smoky green, is a color that goes well with military and outdoor styles. It seems likely that some users will customize the guard bar under the headlight to look like a thick power pipe.

The body color, medium cloudy gray, is a dark color that is difficult to describe without seeing the actual car. In the photo, it looks like olive drab, but since it’s gray, it may have a stronger image of black.
