Up Garage is a nationwide company that buys and sells car and motorcycle accessories. The main purpose of the company’s reuse business is to reuse products and resources, reduce waste, and promote the effective use of resources. In recent years, with growing awareness of environmental issues and interest in a sustainable society, people’s awareness is steadily improving.
The “Art Competition” hosted by Up Garage this time is unique in that it aims to discover the possibilities of utilizing parts in situations that are different from their original business format, and to lead to the manifestation of the SDGs in a new way.
The winner of the Grand Prize was Makoto Kaneko’s “SDGs Metal Kadomatsu for Motorcycle and Car Enthusiasts.” He used a slash-cut muffler, disc rotor, drive sprocket, drive chain, wide wheel, and tire for motorcycles, as well as wire braid for cars, to create a New Year’s Kadomatsu decoration.
“The traditional Japanese New Year’s kadomatsu are made from scratch each time, for the short period leading up to the Matsunouchi period (January 7th or 15th). Since the slash-cut mufflers of the many American bikes we have at home resemble bamboo, I came up with the idea of making a metal kadomatsu using second-hand parts that can be easily disassembled and reassembled the following year,” said the creator.
[Excellent Award] Spanish Painter ver.UP GARAGE / Creator: Yuya Morikawa

◇ Creator’s comment:
I create works by combining local items, crafts, and industrial products that I collect from recycle shops and turning them into pottery. With the theme of creating something new from things that have lost their original value, I collect waste materials and second-hand items and turn them into pottery pieces.
I applied because I thought the competition theme, “Connect UP to the Future,” and the idea of creating something new using recycled materials matched the theme of my work very well.
For this competition, ceramic objects were created using car and motorcycle tires, mufflers, wheel covers, and the ox motif from the zodiac animal (Etomono) made from the traditional craft of Tokoname Shudei (a reddish-brown pottery made by firing clay). We hope you will enjoy seeing these new expressions created from waste materials and second-hand items that have lost their original value.
[Excellent Award] Meadow of Flowers / In the grove of trees / Star / Creator: Toshiyuki Hayashi

◇Comment from the creator:
Based on the theme “Connect UP to the Future,” which gave me the idea of sustainable art, the venue called Auto Salon, the race queens needed for such a glamorous event, and the associated image of women, I created “Clothing Art Made from Discarded Parts.”
・Headphone-shaped object “Meadow of Flowers”
・Eyeglasses-shaped object “In the grove of trees”
・Clutch bag-shaped object “Star”
The three works are inspired by the image of small discarded parts sprouting, blooming, and growing into trees, with life continuing into the future forever, and are an expression of making wishes upon the stars.
