The “R20 Concept” is based on the 1801cc air-oil cooled, four-stroke, horizontally opposed, two-cylinder OHV engine (commonly known as the “Big Boxer Engine”), which is fitted to BMW Motorrad’s cruiser series “R18”, but with the displacement increased to 2000cc. It is a roadster-style concept model that mounts this engine on a newly designed double cradle frame. The swingarm is an adaptation of BMW’s unique Paralever, which suppresses the behaviour typical of shaft drive. Two parallel arms support the rear axle. The upper arm is made from aluminium and the lower arm from steel, creating a unique structure.

BMW Motorrad unveils custom bike-like concept models at various times, including the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a vintage car and motorcycle competition held every June, where the R20 Concept was unveiled. And in nine cases out of ten, these concept models are custom bikes based on production models that will be released later. Going by this formula, it seems likely that a production model similar to the R20 will be released in the not-too-distant future.

We look forward to further news from BMW Motorrad.

↑Projector lens LED headlights are set in the center of the daytime running lights that use LED rings. Because there is no lens-like item covering the front of the light unit, the classic round headlight unit creates a futuristic front face.

↑The seat rails extending from the frame double as the seat base, and the taillight (probably with built-in turn signal function) is set within that base. Making the seat short and floating in the air has the effect of making the body of the bike look compact, which makes the big boxer engine look even larger.

↑ According to BMW’s explanation, the steel lower arm is the swingarm, and the aluminum upper arm is the Paralever strut. Both arms are connected to the aluminum casting parts that support the final case. The layout with the drive shaft exposed is the same as the R18 series.
