It’s not old-fashioned! It may look retro, but the riding quality is modern. Royal Enfield Classic 350 Test Ride

The simple and classic style that embodies the best of the standard is something you’ll never tire of.

Classic-style bikes with simple designs have a timeless appeal. They are beloved by many riders as timeless classics. The popularity of the Honda GB350 underscores the demand for such timeless classic-style bikes.
Many of Royal Enfield's bikes have a retro feel. The new Classic 350 exudes the most classic vibe of all. Honda has also added the classic-style GB350C to its GB350 lineup, and having a competing model is a positive thing for consumers, broadening their options. Let's take a closer look
at the Classic 350. The combination of a steel-tube double-cradle frame and an upright, air-cooled, four-stroke single-cylinder engine is reminiscent of bikes from the 1960s. The teardrop tank with tank pad, deep fenders, and covered front forks further enhance the classic vibe. Each component of the body is beautifully finished and distinctive, creating a powerful presence.

The rival model of the Classic 350 is the Honda GB350C. It is almost equal in performance. Price: 668,800 yen

The flat engine characteristics at low and medium speeds are just right for driving slowly on local roads.

The simple, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine produces a maximum output of 14.9kW (20.2PS) at 6,100 rpm and a maximum torque of 27Nm at 4,000 rpm. Its rival, the GB350C, produces a maximum output of 15.0kW (20PS) at 5,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 29Nm at 3,000 rpm, so there's not much difference in performance. They're also both low- and mid-range models. However, the Classic 350's power feeling is characterized by the strong throbbing sensation typical of a single-cylinder engine, and the sound emitted from the cabton-style muffler is loud and crisp. When you open the throttle, the engine responds with a throbbing thump, giving you a real sense of driving. While the actual speed isn't particularly fast, the joy of being in control is outweighed by the sheer power.
Though it's not powerful, the 350cc displacement provides ample performance for regular roads. It doesn't lose to cars when it comes to starting acceleration, and it's also capable of cruising at 100km/h on the highway. In other words, it's perfectly fine for practical use. In fact, it feels comfortable to drive at a speed of 50-70km/h, which is often used on local roads.

The air-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder 349cc engine is characterized by its emphasis on low and mid-range torque. It also features a pulsating single-cylinder feel.

The muffler is a Cabton type, which matches the classic style well and has a crisp sound.

Contrary to its appearance, you will be surprised and delighted by its light and sporty handling.

With a seat height of 805 mm and a weight of 195 kg, I wondered whether the handling would be impressive. However, I was surprised to find that it didn't feel too heavy when I raised the bike, and that the foot placement was easy. The front and rear suspension, especially the rear suspension, didn't seem to have particularly good initial response, but the slim foot placement probably made it easy to reach the ground. I'd also like to add that the saddle-type seat was wide and had decent cushioning, providing a comfortable and secure seating experience. The
first thing I noticed when I started riding was the powerful low- and mid-range torque, allowing me to accelerate without feeling the bike's weight. This is due in part to the engine's characteristics, but also to the excellent balance and solid straight-line stability of the bike. The 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels likely contribute to its high stability. On the other hand, this chassis configuration tends to result in somewhat sluggish handling. Well, it seems like that kind of handling would suit this classic-style bike, but I was surprised at how light and neutral the handling characteristics were, and how easy it was to turn. Its sporty riding is enjoyable both in urban areas and on tours.
Generally, when we think of a sporty bike, we imagine a bike that can achieve high cornering speeds with deep banking and handles with agility. While that's certainly correct, I think what's important is that the rider can control it at their own will, and the handling responds to that. In other words, speed isn't the same thing. Rather, the Classic 350's handling, which allows for flexible maneuverability in everyday riding, is what provides the rider with joy and satisfaction.

 Foot reach (rider height 178cm)

As befits a classic style model, the forward-set footpegs give the lower body space. The handlebars are low but located in front, so the upper body is upright and comfortable.

The seat height is 805mm, but it’s easier to reach the ground than you’d imagine from the numbers. Also, the weight of 195kg isn’t a big deal.

Both feet can be placed on the ground easily. The narrowed front of the seat also contributes to the ease of placing your feet on the ground. (Rider height: 178 cm)

When you put your foot down, it doesn’t interfere with the step, so you can reach the ground easily and there’s no danger of getting your foot caught.

The Classic 350 also features equipment that is commonplace on modern motorcycles, such as front and rear disc brakes with ABS, meters with built-in LCD displays, and LED headlights. However, what I feel is its greatest appeal is that it not only fully realizes the basic performance of a motorcycle (running, turning, stopping), but also adds to the joy of riding and the satisfaction of owning it. And the fact that it can be ridden with a regular motorcycle license (medium license) is another factor that makes it a familiar presence. While the eye tends to be drawn to the classic design, it realizes the appeal of a motorcycle at a high level.
