Considering cost and convenience, the company focused on the “Streamo,” a small, electric three-wheeled scooter for employees to use outside the home.

Sumida Ward in Tokyo is home to famous places such as Tokyo Skytree, and is characterized by its downtown atmosphere that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Sumida Ward in Tokyo is home to a variety of tourist attractions, including the 634m-tall Tokyo Skytree and the Ryogoku Kokugikan, a well-known venue for sumo wrestling . Located in the eastern part of Tokyo’s 23 wards, Sumida Ward is characterized by a generally down-to-earth, common-people atmosphere compared to the central districts (Chuo Ward, Minato Ward, Chiyoda Ward, etc.) which have a more celebrity-oriented image, and the western districts (Suginami Ward, Setagaya Ward, etc.) .

In fiscal 2024, Sumida Ward will formulate a new “Sumida Ward Regional Public Transportation Plan (tentative name) , ” which will include consideration of introducing new transportation services and utilizing personal mobility .

Currently, the ward’s employees travel for official business in ward-owned cars, bicycles, trains, and buses.

・When traveling by car, in addition to the hassle of finding a parking space, the high parking fees that are unique to the 23 wards are a major drawback

. ・When traveling by bicycle, long distances are physically demanding. Even for young employees, traveling in the middle of summer can pose a risk of heat stroke.

・When traveling by train or bus, there is a lot of time lost walking from the station or bus stop to your destination, which can be very physically draining.

In order to improve these issues, the ward is considering using electric three-wheeled motorbikes, which are “specified small mopeds (Note 1)” and are inexpensive and do not require a driver’s license, as a means of transportation for employees to use on official business.

They offer more convenience and performance than bicycles at a low cost.

To introduce the electric three-wheeled bikes, the ward asked for cooperation from Streamo Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Sumida-ku, Tokyo), a local startup company (SIC member) that develops and sells the stand-up three-wheeled mobility vehicle “Streamo.”

To date, the company has been actively holding awareness-raising events and safety seminars within the ward. The ward also plans to use this demonstration experiment as an opportunity to promote the use of next-generation mobility and improve the convenience of resident life through public-private-academia collaboration.

This will be the first attempt in Tokyo (according to Streamo and Sumida Ward) to use a stand-up electric three-wheeled mobility vehicle for official business.

Details of the demonstration experiment

This demonstration experiment is a joint venture between the ward, iU University of Information, Management and Innovation, and Streamo Inc. The experiment aims to verify the feasibility of using personal mobility devices for official duties by Sumida ward employees (deployed in departments where they frequently go out).

By utilizing Streamo for official travel within Sumida Ward, which stretches from north to south, we will measure the work efficiency of employees and the economic efficiency of official travel, and consider the optimal operation method assuming the implementation of personal mobility. We will also identify issues.

The “Streamo S01JTA (without rearview mirror)” is a specific small motorized bicycle. The maximum speed can be selected from three modes: 6km/h, 12km/h, and 20km/h. It can be switched between three modes (6km/h, 12km/h, 20km/h). It can respond to various everyday situations, from walking speed range to bicycle speed range. *Only the 6km/h mode can be used on sidewalks with bicycle-allowed signs.
