HELLO CYCLING selected for Tokyo Metropolitan Government project

OpenStreet Co., Ltd. has been selected for Tokyo’s “e-Mobility Utilization Promotion Project” and has announced the installation of a charger station and the introduction of compatible “specified small motorized bicycles” (hereinafter referred to as electric bicycles) on “HELLO CYCLING,” one of Japan’s largest shared bicycle platforms.

A special moped that can be ridden like a bicycle

Electric bicycles are a new type of mobility that requires a seated rider and can be driven fully electrically without pedaling. They are classified as a “specified small motorized bicycle” under the revised Road Traffic Act that came into effect on July 1, 2023. Anyone aged 16 or older does not need a driver’s license to ride one, but wearing a helmet is a recommended effort.

One of the features of this electric bicycle is the stability it provides, as it is a seated type that allows you to rest your weight on the seat. Unlike kick scooters, which require you to stand, it allows you to ride stably without losing your posture even when riding on uneven roads or over steps.

In addition, the high torque setting provides excellent climbing performance, allowing for stable climbing even on steep slopes. Furthermore, the use of disc brakes makes it easy to adjust speed even on steep descents, ensuring high safety.

In terms of operability, it can be driven intuitively by simply turning the throttle with the right hand on the handlebars, and since there is no need to pedal like with a bicycle, it is designed to be less tiring to drive over long distances.

It is small, measuring 14 inches, making it easy for people of all ages and genders to use.

Borrowing procedures can be done via a smartphone app

The battery has been increased in capacity, achieving a range of approximately 40km. Users can check the remaining battery level and range using the “HELLO CYCLING” app.

For safety reasons, the bike is equipped with a button that allows the user to select between roadway-only mode (maximum speed 20km/h) and sidewalk-accessible mode (maximum speed 6km/h). In sidewalk-accessible mode, the bike is only permitted on sidewalks marked with road signs indicating “for ordinary bicycles and pedestrians only.”

To use the service, first download the “HELLO CYCLING” app onto your smartphone and register as a free member. Search for a station on the app and reserve an electric bicycle. When you arrive at the station, use the app to read the QR code displayed on the smart lock to unlock it and begin using it. When returning the bicycle, return it to the designated station and operate the smart lock again to complete the return procedure.

The introduction of this new electric bicycle is expected to further diversify means of transportation in urban areas and provide a more comfortable and convenient mobility environment.
