The rows of cherry blossom trees that stretch out like a tunnel are soothing.
The cherry blossoms here bloom from early to mid-April. More than 2,000 cherry trees cover the entire hill. The 32-hectare site was once a quarry, and local residents have cooperated to plant a variety of cherry trees, including Somei-Yoshino, Kawazu, and weeping cherry trees. The “Torayama Cherry Blossom Viewing Association,” which manages the area and maintains the walking trails, boasts over 120 volunteer members. Parking is free, but admission requires a contribution of 100 yen or more.
Higashichichibu Village is located slightly west of central Saitama Prefecture, adjacent to Chichibu City on the northeast side of the mountains. It is a triangular area surrounded by Ogawa Town to the east, Chichibu Town to the west, and Nagatoro Town and Yorii Town to the north. The coordinates and address below indicate the parking lot at the entrance to “Torayama Senbonzakura,” located on the northeast side of Prefectural Route 294 (parallel to the Ouchizawa River). The park is located just after turning off the prefectural road and crossing the Ouchizawa River bridge.
It’s about 15 km (25 minutes by car) from the Arashiyama-Ogawa Interchange or Hanazono Interchange on the Kan’etsu Expressway. There are no permanent restrooms in the parking lot. However, temporary restrooms are installed during cherry blossom viewing season. Also, a parking lot and public restrooms are available at the Dodaira bus stop, about 500 m (1 minute by car) north on Prefectural Route 294. Conversely, heading south on Prefectural Route 11, about 3 km (4 minutes by car), leads to the roadside station “Washi no Sato Higashichichibu.”
The spectacular sight of cherry blossoms spreading like a tiered platform on the slope is a spectacular sight. It’s the perfect location for a short hike. The plaza, where you can stroll from the parking lot, is about 200 m, but the elevation gain is already 40 m. Fudo Falls at the back is 1,200 m. The highest point further back is 1,650 m away, with an elevation gain of 155 m.
If you happen to be lucky enough to visit when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, you’re guaranteed to be extremely lucky and excited. In addition to Toyama’s Thousand Cherry Blossoms, the village also has other spots where you can see the spring blossoms in full bloom, such as Ouchizawa Hanamomo no Sato and Shiraishi District Spring Mountain Village.
We recommend getting the latest information from the tourism website below and planning your trip based on the cherry blossoms’ current blooming status.
