I can’t remember the last time I was so impressed with a bike. [Test Ride of the 2nd Generation XSR900] | 1000km Serious Test Ride Part 1/3

In recent years, the world of two-wheeled vehicles has seen a large number of neo-classical cafe racers. However, a model with as much character as the second-generation XSR900, and one that conveys the strong sense of the development team’s vision, is perhaps quite rare. The XSR900 ABS is Yamaha’s naked sports model, fitted with a CF aluminium die-cast frame and a water-cooled, 4-stroke, in-line 3-cylinder, DOHC, 4-valve, 888cc engine based on the “Crossplane Concept” (a design concept that reduces inertial torque and efficiently extracts only the combustion torque generated in the combustion chamber). The XSR900 GP ABS is also based on the XSR900 ABS and is equipped with exterior parts that pay homage to the 1980s GP factory machine, the YZR500. Both models are characterised by performance that allows them to comfortably ride through winding roads and sporty handling.

The Yamaha XSR900GP is a bike that riders in their 50s will want to ride. Is the only thing it struggles with making tight U-turns?

Yamaha’s XSR900GP, a model that pays homage to the 1980s Grand Prix machine, the YZR500, caused a stir at last year’s Japan Mobility Show 2023. Based on the sports heritage XSR900, not only does it have a special exterior, but the frame and suspension have also been modified, showing Yamaha’s extraordinary enthusiasm. As a member of the racer replica generation, I would like to share with you the worldview of this bike. REPORT: OYA Yuichi PHOTO: YAMADA Shunsuke

OVER’s demo vehicle is based on an XSR900 GP ABS equipped with an upper cowl, and has been customized with a genuine Yamaha Y’s Gear seat cowl, an aftermarket under cowl, and a rearview mirror that is fixed to the upper cowl.

The front and rear 17-inch wheels, which are the same diameter as the stock wheels, are OVER’s luxurious “GP-XX” wheels. These wheels feature a 20-spoke design that combines a classic look with reliable driving performance. The Y-shaped spoke design developed through the GP-TEN design has been further developed, and the multi-spoke design is reminiscent of a wire-spoke wheel, creating a unique worldview and further emphasizing the individuality of your beloved bike. The size is F3.50-17, R6.00-17.

Compact racing sliders with minimal structure are installed on both sides of the front cowling, without disrupting the distinctive style of the fairing.

The bike is also coordinated with luxurious items such as a rear disc brake equipped with a Brembo 2-piston caliper, which makes full use of the company’s rear caliper support, a machined aluminum rear step, and a sports riding handlebar kit.

The muffler is the newly released “SESMIC-IV full exhaust” that matches the 1980s racer style of the XSR900 GP ABS perfectly, featuring a black painted exhaust pipe, aluminum welded stays, and a SESMIC silencer.

DIG-IT develops, manufactures, and sells various exhaust systems under the SUPER-BIKE brand. The XSR900 GP ABS exhibited at the company’s booth at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2025 is equipped with the original Y’s Gear under-cowl kit and seat cowl, as well as the new SUPER-BIKE product, the old-style full exhaust system “XSR900GP-Hand Bend-Type-200h.”

This muffler, developed exclusively for racing, is a hand-bent steel model that perfectly matches the style of the XSR900 GP ABS, which pays homage to Yamaha vehicles from the 1980s. It features a stepped 38.1mm-42.7mm exhaust pipe, a 50.8mm-60.5mm rail pipe, and a silencer reminiscent of the RC SUGO mufflers of the time. The joints use spring hooks, and the muffler is a genuine product that has been meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail. You can choose between the oval type “Silencer Type OW” and the circular type “Silencer Type Y.”

The stock upper cowl has been reinforced with “reinforced upper stays,” and the rearview mirror has been changed from a bar-end type to a cowl-mounted type using a “cowl mirror kit.”

The XSR900GP is a bike that will make you fall in love with its ride. It’s a bike that lets you feel the traditional Yamaha handling.

Since the XSR900GP was released, the veteran riders around me have been really keen on it. It is based on the design of the YZR500, which was a huge success in the golden age of racing in the 1980s, and it even comes in the classic Marlboro livery. It would be strange if it didn’t become a hot topic among older riders. But what kind of machine is it to actually ride? This time, we decided to try it out on the street, on the highway, and on winding roads. REPORT: Takeshi Goto PHOTO: Shunsuke Yamada
