It was a scorching hot day with a maximum temperature of 35°C and humidity of 65%. The weather was clear, making for a perfect test environment…

Motorfan BIKES has become an annual tradition of conducting experiments and test experiences in the scorching heat to find out if there are any items that can help you beat the heat while riding your bike during the sweltering summer. In 2025, the editorial team once again introduced a selection of items that caught their eye and were purchased with their own money (six items were tested in 2025).
If you get heatstroke,
1. Underarms
2. Both sides
of the neck 3. Groin
The golden rule seems to be to cool the area (top 1-3 results from searches and research on various hospital websites). This is the fourth installment, and this time we’re testing a “sporty ring” that, when soaked in water and worn around the neck, keeps the area cool and comfortable, and is supposed to help prevent heatstroke. Gel-type neck rings are popular these days, but I wondered what a water-based type would be like, so I bought one. But how effective is the water-based type at cooling?

Overview of “Sporty Ring”
This convenient cooling product can be used anywhere, anytime, without the hassle of freezing. It cools the body from the base of the neck down, using evaporative cooling to cool the neck, preventing heatstroke and rising body temperature. It weighs about the same as a single strawberry, weighing just 23g, making it ultra-lightweight and unobtrusive. It’s perfect for a wide range of activities, including sports, leisure, outdoor work, and commuting to work or school.
To use, simply wet it with water. It can be kept on hand for continued use, even when traveling, and can be reused over and over again. It is also sweat-resistant, and its key feature is that it can be used to both “cool” and “clean” at the same time.
The ring is compact, measuring just 1cm in diameter. Its slim, sleek design makes it easy to wear and makes the neckline look sleek. The majority of the ring is made of fabric, so it’s safe for even those with sensitive skin.

This “Sporty Ring” is a necklace-type device that cools the area around your neck. It’s very easy to use. Just wet the device with water (it cannot be cooled in the freezer) and hang it around your neck. Both ends of the ring are magnetic, so it can be attached and detached with just one touch.
As the name “sporty” suggests, the design is light and dynamic, making it suitable for any sport. It weighs only about 23g, making it extremely light and causing no strain or discomfort around the neck. I also tried using it on a 10km jog, and it didn’t feel like it was getting in the way.
We wetted the Sporty Ring with tap water and tested it outdoors at 35°C, and found that it had a decent cooling effect in the shade. However, in the sun, the intense heat took its toll on the body, and it didn’t feel very “cool.” Also, in the sun, the moisture in the ring rose quickly, and it dried quickly.
In conclusion, this sporty ring seems to be effective in cool, shady areas or indoors. When outdoors in the sun, it requires frequent wetting, and I got the impression that it takes a lot of effort to keep it cool.
Place it around your neck and take a driving test!

In the photo, the sporty ring is intentionally exposed outside the jacket to make it stand out, but the basic principle is that it should be in direct contact with the skin.
Wet the sporty ring with water, put it on, and go for a ride right away. You’ll feel a bit cool for a while, but only for a few minutes. The water evaporates in the harsh sunlight and hot air while riding, and the cooling effect of the sporty ring quickly fades.
If you ask me, “Are sporty rings useful for riding a motorcycle in midsummer?”, my answer is NO. I felt that it was far more effective to wet a towel and wrap it around my neck, or to put a frozen ice pack in a thin hand towel and wrap it around my neck (see the page below).
As mentioned above, the Sporty Ring is most effective in cool, shady areas or indoors. Unfortunately, because it needs to be frequently wetted with water, I wonder if its cooling effect is weak when used on a motorcycle.
