I want to make my Super Cub 50 faster!

Although production of new Super Cub 50s has ended, you can still find new ones in stock on the market. The Super Cub 110 is attractive because it is equipped with cast wheels and disc brakes, but there is a strong opinion that “if it’s a Cub, it has to have spoke wheels!” If you are looking for a new Cub with spoke wheels, the only option is the 50cc model, so the conclusion is reached whether you like it or not. Also, if you only have a four-wheel license or a moped license, the Cub 50 is still the one to choose.

The first step is to replace the muffler!

When riding a Super Cub 50, there’s no denying that it feels underpowered. It’s great for leisurely rides, but when riding long distances or coming across winding roads, you’ll want a little more power. Let’s think about what to do when you feel that way. This time, we took a look at a video from Moto Champ TV, which distributes free videos on YouTube, titled ” Make your Super Cub 50 fast! SP Takegawa’s recommended menu revealed! ” We’ve put together a digest of the content for you to use as a reference.

Just replace the SP Takegawa P-SHOOTER muffler and you’ll get an increase of +0.4ps!

The first step in tuning is to change the muffler. Changing the exhaust sound makes you feel like you’re faster, and more importantly, it gives you different characteristics than the stock muffler. Simply changing the muffler to the SP Takegawa P-SHOOTER muffler is effective, as it will increase your horsepower by 0.4 horsepower.

After replacing the muffler, try changing the camshaft in the engine to a high lift cam!

If you’re going to replace your muffler, you should also consider the engine. Tuning your engine straight away can be a bit intimidating, so why not just replace the camshaft? SP Takegawa’s sports camshaft improves power output at high RPMs, so by replacing it with a muffler that provides good exhaust, you can get a completely different engine feel than the stock one.

If you change the exhaust system, changing the intake system will have a dramatic effect!

The SP Takegawa FI Con 2 injection controller makes the muffler and camshaft replacement even more effective. By adding it to the stock computer, you can change the fuel mixture. This allows you to set it up to match the muffler + high camshaft replacement, doubling the effect.

SP Takegawa’s F1 Con 2 allows you to adjust the settings to suit your tuning level simply by turning the central dial!

This FI CON 2 comes with a menu of settings already available. By turning the round dial in the center, you can adjust the fuel mixture to suit the engine specifications. So, of course, there are settings for a muffler + high cam, and it can also be used if you bore it up in the future.

If changing the intake and exhaust system isn’t enough, try bore-up!

If you still want more power, we recommend finally bore-up. It will be registered as a Class 2 moped, so you will need a small or larger license, but the benefits of not having to worry about speed limits of 30km/h or two-stage right turns are great. A larger displacement naturally leads to more power, and it will become a completely different vehicle from a 50cc. SP Takegawa offers a variety of bore-up kits, from kits that only include the cylinder and piston if you already have a high cam and FI Con 2 installed, to kits that also include a high cam, and even the Hyper S-Stage bore-up kit that includes the FI Con 2 and front sprocket.

When you increase the bore, the heat generated by the engine oil increases, so adding an oil cooler is effective!

When you bore out an engine, the amount of heat inevitably increases. If the oil temperature rises too much, the engine oil will deteriorate, so it is essential to change the oil early. If you change the oil yourself frequently, it’s fine, but if you don’t change the oil yourself or if the oil change cycle is long, we recommend adding an oil cooler. It efficiently lowers the oil temperature, making it harder for the engine oil to deteriorate, so the normal oil change cycle will no longer be a problem.

If you increase the bore and register it as a Class 2 moped, the speed range will increase, so you should also review the suspension!

When you bore out the engine and register it as a Class 2 moped, the speed range inevitably becomes higher. This can leave you feeling unsatisfied with the suspension. Therefore, we recommend upgrading to a reinforced rear shock absorber, which can be easily replaced. For the Super Cub 50 (AA09), there are four spring colors available: plated, yellow, red, and black, so you can choose the one that matches your body color.

As the speed range increases, it becomes important to improve braking performance!

Braking performance also becomes an issue when power is increased. After all, braking from high speeds is much more important than with a 50cc bike. However, disc brakes don’t quite capture the essence of a Cub. Therefore, we recommend installing a reinforced brake arm kit, which uses the principle of leverage to improve braking performance with a light touch while still using the original drum brakes. The brake arms are 27mm longer than the original ones, which changes the lever ratio and achieves a greater effect. Made from aluminum, they also contribute to weight reduction.

Strengthen the cam chain tensioner to improve engine performance!

It’s true that a bore-up engine places greater strain on each part than an original one. In particular, if the cam chain tensioner is left as is, the rubber at the end of the push rod may cave in, potentially leading to damage to the push rod head. However, by replacing it with a super cam chain tensioner made of ultra-super duralumin and equipped with an oil hole, you can avoid this problem. Not only is the arm itself strong, but the contact area of the push rod is increased, reducing the risk of rubber cave-in and damage.

When you actually try it out, the effect of the bore-up is outstanding!

So what does it feel like to actually test drive the SP Takegawa demo bike, which has been bored out to 81cc? First of all, the effect is noticeable just by riding along with the flow of traffic on a regular road. This is especially noticeable when you shift up to fourth gear and go over ups and downs, and depending on the gradient, you can ride without stress without having to downshift. Also, when you open the throttle wide, you get a feeling of acceleration that is completely different from a 50cc bike. The demo bike is fitted with a rear shock, oil cooler, reinforced brake arms, etc., so you can enjoy the effects of the bore-up to your heart’s content.

You can drive safely even on busy main roads!

The effect of the bore-up is actually great on main roads. You can maintain the same cruising speed as a four-wheeled vehicle, and in some cases you can even overtake without stress. You should no longer be tailgated by the four-wheeled vehicle behind you when starting off from a traffic light.

If you want to go on a tour, it’s convenient to have a bag that you can hang on the handlebars!

When riding a more powerful Cub, it’s only natural that you’ll want to go on a tour. Moreover, the increased speed range will make long distance riding even more enjoyable than with a 50cc. That’s where a touring bag comes in handy. Smartphone holders that mount on the handlebars are convenient, but the touring bag in the photo can be used to monitor your smartphone screen and can also store your wallet. It’s convenient because you can carry the bag with you when you stop off at places during your tour. What do you think? It might make you want to try bore-up your Super Cub 50.
