A modern interpretation of retro design

The Kawasaki Z650RS is a neo-retro model that incorporates many classic styling elements while also featuring modern forms and functionality. Its ’70s-inspired round LED headlight, analog-style speedometer and tachometer, and color panel and paint options reminiscent of the Z900RS are noteworthy. The fuel tank features an edgy design that emphasizes the retro feel, and the line separating the top and sides emphasizes the tank’s thinness and enhances the fit when gripping the bike with your knees. The tail is less upswept than the Z650 and has a horizontal design, while the LED taillight and seat shape befitting a retro sports bike bring a sense of unity to the overall form. The bike is available in three body colors: “Metallic Ocean Blue,” “Candy Emerald Green,” and “Ebony,” each creating a different impression to suit a wide range of tastes. 

Driving performance based on engine and chassis configuration

The parallel-twin 649 cm³ engine features improved crankcase lubrication and fuel injection control, resulting in torque characteristics and response that prioritize ease of use in daily driving. Maximum power is 50.2 kW (approximately 68 PS) at 8000 rpm, and maximum torque is 64.0 N·m at 6700 rpm, demonstrating impressive mid-range power. The six-speed transmission and wet multi-plate clutch combine for smooth power transmission and ease of handling. The chassis is a trellis frame made of high-tensile steel, which alone achieves a weight reduction of approximately 13.5 kg. The suspension features telescopic forks in the front and Kawasaki’s “Horizontal Back-link” suspension in the rear. The vehicle weighs 187 kg (curb mass), with an estimated dry weight of 174 kg. The seat height is 820 mm, designed to be comfortable and not too bulky. 

A balance of maneuverability, comfort, and safety equipment

The Z650RS prioritizes comfort and maneuverability in everyday riding, and its lightweight and slim design aids maneuverability at low speeds. The wide, low-profile handlebars ensure a more upright riding position than a forward-leaning one. The seat also allows for easy foot contact with the ground, providing a sense of security for riders of all sizes. The brakes, with dual Ø300 mm discs in the front and a single Ø220 mm disc in the rear, provide ample braking power. The bike also features two modes of KTRC traction control, providing electronic assistance depending on slippery surfaces and riding conditions. The assist and slipper clutch provides a lighter clutch lever feel and stabilizes rear wheel movement during sudden downshifts. Fuel economy is 4.4 liters/100 km (standard configuration) and CO₂ emissions are 107 g/km. The 35 kW kit model maintains similar figures. 

Specifications and value-added accessories

Its dimensions are 2065 mm in length, 800 mm in width, 1115 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 1405 mm. Ground clearance is 125 mm, making it suitable for use primarily on paved roads while still maintaining its ability to handle bumps and other obstacles. Fuel capacity is 12.0 liters. Tires are 120/70 ZR17 in the front and 160/60 ZR17 in the rear. A wide range of accessories are available, not only in terms of color and design but also in terms of functionality, including USB sockets, grab bars, side grips, and swingarm bolt covers. The low-profile “ERGO-FIT™ Low Seat” option (which reduces the seat height by 20 mm) is also available, making it suitable for smaller riders and those who prioritize ease of reaching the ground.
