Increasing awareness of electric micromobility, safety awareness, and user expectations and concerns come to light

Panasonic Cycle Tech conducted a nationwide survey on electric micromobility awareness targeting 1,245 men and women aged between 10 and 70. The survey looked at awareness, usage experience, and impressions of four types of electric assist bicycles, which are becoming increasingly popular as last-mile transportation methods in urban areas: electric assist bicycles, designated small motorized bicycles (kick scooter and bicycle types), and electric motorcycles. Over 80% of respondents were aware of electric assist bicycles, and approximately one in four had used them. Over 60% were aware of designated small motorized bicycles, including kick scooter types, and the majority of respondents across all types felt that they “seemed convenient.” Meanwhile, one in three respondents felt that electric assist bicycles “seemed dangerous,” while over one in two felt the same for other types. Furthermore, over 60% of respondents called for clarification of traffic rules, highlighting the need for systems to improve safety as a key issue.
