Bikes Weekly News Digest is a feature that brings you all the hot topics announced in the previous week. This time, we will be introducing the news announced from September 22nd to 28th, 2025.

Features and prospects of the new electric mobility “MU” that meets demand for short-distance travel

Panasonic Cycletech will release its first specified small motorized bicycle, “MU,” in early December 2025. This product is designed as an electric mobility device that can be driven solely by the motor without pedaling and does not require a license, and has the potential to dramatically change the convenience of short-distance travel, especially in urban areas.

In recent years, there has been a growing need for more convenient mobility options in addition to electrically assisted bicycles for commuting, shopping, sightseeing, and other activities. In response to this trend, Panasonic, leveraging its design expertise as a bicycle manufacturer, has taken on the challenge of designing a vehicle body that emphasizes ease of boarding and disembarking, operability, and safety. The MU features a seated structure and bicycle tires, making it resistant to uneven road surfaces and bumps. Anticipating frequent use of the bicycle, the MU features a U-shaped frame that makes it easy to straddle, and the seat height can be adjusted to suit height and use. It also features a sidewalk mode (maximum speed 6 km/h), making it compatible with specifications that allow it to be used on sidewalks. When activated, it automatically switches to sidewalk mode, and then switching it to road mode (maximum speed 20 km/h) can be switched to road mode.

The battery shares the same specifications as the electric assist bicycle and is designed to be removable and rechargeable indoors. It also supports fast charging, ensuring practicality. The output is 250 W, and the expected range per charge is approximately 40 km. The vehicle weighs approximately 24 kg, has a total length of 1,610 mm, and a total width of 585 mm. Three color variations are available: Pearl Gem White/Natural Black, Shine Light Green/Natural Black, and Matte Soil Beige/Matte Jet Black. The suggested retail price (tax included) is 234,000 yen.

There is no compromise on safety either. The bike complies with the safety standards for specific small motorized bicycles set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and also undergoes its own unique quality testing. Durability and reliability are pursued through repeated load tests on the frame, braking performance tests, and corrosion resistance tests using salt spray. The bike is also equipped with an acceleration sensor that allows for output control on slopes.

They also put a lot of effort into post-purchase support. The main body is covered by a one-year warranty, while the frame, front fork, and drive unit are covered by a three-year warranty. If you register your battery, you can receive a three-year battery warranty, and there are also optional services available: the “Futameguri” warranty extension service, the “Sakizonae” battery theft compensation service, and the “Sugumile” transportation service in case of breakdown. If your bike is stolen within three years of purchase, a preferential treatment system is applied, allowing you to purchase a new bike of the same type by paying 30% of the bike’s price plus an assembly fee.

The MU is classified as a “specified small motorized bicycle” that meets certain conditions, such as a maximum speed of 20 km/h or less, body dimensions, and power output. A driver’s license is not required, but it should be noted that there are obligations such as being 16 years of age or older, having compulsory automobile liability insurance, and having a license plate attached. However, one of its features is that it is a special specified small motorized bicycle that is permitted to be ridden on sidewalks.

Panasonic’s mission is to “create a future where people all over the world can ride under the blue sky,” and with MU as its starting point, the company will continue to propose new cycle mobility value that combines environmental friendliness and convenience. Furthermore, with an eye toward a society where mobility diversification and safety are both ensured, the company is also developing a safety awareness campaign called the “Cycle Mobility Safety Campaign: Ride with the City,” and has revealed plans to promote traffic rules for specified small motorized bicycles in addition to electrically assisted bicycles.
