A versatile and reliable bike, an evolution of the DR-Z series
Suzuki announced the new dual-purpose bike “DR-Z4S” in November 2024, and this Osaka Motorcycle Show marked its first public unveiling in Japan as a concept exhibit.
This model is based on the long-standing DR-Z400S and is a next-generation model that combines the comfort, safety, and environmental performance that modern riders demand. It is a bike that can be used for a wide range of purposes, from city riding to forest roads and long touring, and is truly “Ready 4 Anything.”
Powerful and easy-to-use 398cc engine
Starting with the specifications for the overseas model, the DR-Z4S is equipped with a newly developed 398cc water-cooled, 4-stroke DOHC engine. This lightweight, high-revving engine has already been highly praised, but improvements have been made to achieve powerful and smooth torque characteristics. It also complies with Euro 5+ regulations and takes fuel economy and emissions into consideration. High efficiency has been achieved in every detail, including two iridium spark plugs, titanium intake valves, sodium-filled exhaust valves, and improved combustion chamber and piston designs.
High-rigidity steel frame and latest electronic control
The body uses a newly designed steel pipe frame. It combines high rigidity and flexibility, allowing for stable riding even on rough roads. The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) installed there includes throttle-by-wire, SDMS (ride mode selection), STCS (traction control), and more, supporting optimal riding according to the rider’s skill and road conditions.
Of particular note is the ABS ON/OFF switch function. The DR-Z4S is Suzuki’s first production model that allows the front and rear ABS to be disabled independently, significantly improving braking performance on off-road.
A range of equipment that takes comfort and practicality into consideration
The riding position is based on an upright posture, designed to reduce fatigue even on long rides. The LED projector headlight and position lamp with integrated turn signals combine visibility and design, and the styling is aggressive and slim, embodying the direction of modern dual-purpose bikes.
Furthermore, the engine’s cooling and output performance have been improved overall by adopting a 42mm throttle body, a newly designed radiator, a large diameter fan, and a dry sump lubrication system. The clutch operation is light and smooth thanks to the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS), making it comfortable even when driving around town.

The DR-Z4S is versatile enough to handle everything from everyday use to serious trail riding. It features a wide range of electronic controls, a body structure that excels in durability and operability, and a refined power unit. Everything is designed to stimulate the “fun of riding” and “spirit of adventure.”
